About Shayla Fish

Shayla Fish is a versatile artist based in Terre Haute, Indiana.

From a young age, art has been both my refuge and my passion. It’s a creative escape, a place of calm where I can lose myself and find new ways to express the world around me.

This deep connection to art led me to pursue a BFA in Art Education, where I have since had the privilege of sharing my love for art with students ranging from pre-school to adults.

To me, creating art is much like being a scientist—constantly experimenting, exploring new mediums, and finding innovative solutions to creative challenges.

I believe that every artist, regardless of experience, should continue to seek new methods and embrace fresh perspectives, as this nurtures both personal growth and a deeper appreciation for the arts.

While I have a fondness for drawing and painting, it is the world of collage that truly captivates me, guiding me down an endless rabbit hole of creative discovery.

Each collage is a one-of-a-kind creation, unique in its form and function. Whether constructed digitally using Photoshop, or by the tactile process of cutting paper with glue and scissors (or a combination of both), the process feels like assembling a mad scientist's puzzle—always seeking the perfect piece in places where it might not belong.

My work spans multiple mediums: hand-painted pieces, digital creations, paper collages, drawings, CAD modeling, needle felting, ceramics, and printmaking.

My inspiration comes from the world around me, the delicate beauty of scientific botanical illustrations, and the fantastical elements of Alice in Wonderland.

I am deeply influenced by artists who have shaped my journey, including: Dorothea Tanning, Frida Kahlo, Max Ernst, J.J. Grandville, Higuchi Yuko, Nathalie Lete, Mab Graves, Mark Ryden, Robert Crumb,  Bill Plympton, Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Beatrix Potter, and many more.
